April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

In order to keep Creech Airmen better informed on Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the base is hosting a fair April 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside bldg. 1018. This year's theme is "Our Strength is for Defending."

The Airmen and Family Readiness Center, Family Advocacy, and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office will be some of the agencies participating in the information fair.

"We wanted to get the word out on these events and we usually open the fair up to other helping agencies to participate," said Lisa Surette, 99th Air Base Wing SARC.

Ms. Surette also explained the reason behind the Department of Defense's choice of this year's SAAM theme.

"The 2009 DoD message to service members is that it is everyone's duty to keep each other safe and to help everyone understand that the effects of sexual assault are similar to 'friendly fire,' casualties," she said. "Most of the sexual assaults affecting Airmen occur between people who know each other."

Ms. Surette said that it is important to hold information fairs such as the upcoming SAAM fair at Creech as well as Nellis.

"We have an entire community at Creech that should be provided the opportunity to get this information and if we can make it a little easier for them by holding events at Creech, we will," she said.

Ms. Surette said that she hopes Creech Airmen will take advantage of the information fair.

"We would love to have everyone come out and see what information we have. You never know when you will need to use our services or refer someone to our agencies and this is a great opportunity to get some great information from us," Ms. Surette said.
